As West Catholic enters its second year as an official Special Olympics Michigan Unified School, we are thrilled to share the program’s remarkable growth with our community.
Unified Sports continues to bring students with and without disabilities together, fostering friendships and teamwork through shared athletic experiences. These programs break down barriers, creating an inclusive environment where every student can thrive. Our Unified programs also include leadership components, providing students with opportunities to grow personally while developing valuable skills they can carry with them through life.
One of the most exciting developments this year is the launch of our first Unified Basketball team, a milestone in our commitment to inclusion through athletics. Additionally, we have seen increased participation in our Sports & Leadership course (led by Special Education Co-Teacher Molly Bergman), where students of all abilities play recreational sports like Bocce Ball and Pickleball together each day. This class is designed to promote physical activity while also cultivating leadership, cooperation and teamwork.
We are incredibly blessed to offer these opportunities at West Catholic. Unified Sports and leadership programs not only enrich the lives of participants but also strengthen our entire school community by fostering a sense of belonging, inclusion and mutual respect. We look forward to continuing to build upon our early success and create a more inclusive environment for students of all abilities.
Go West!
